UMass Amherst GD5 Studio

The following work was created by graduate students in their final year of study at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Their studio work featured here focused architectural joint in both it's techtonic and conceptual aspects.

Students were first asked to design and fabricate a joint between two materials using no adhesives. Keeping in mind the conceptual content of their joint, students were then asked to extrapolate their joint-concept to an assembly, span and finally an enclosure.

These design studies culminated in their design projects, where students were asked to create a boathouse and community center on a waterfront site in New Haven, Connecticut.

Emphasis was placed on clearly elucidating their design concepts through diagrams and writing.
